Benson Mates
Mates was teaching at Berkeley at least as far back as 1960. He was born in 1919, so the likely date of his graduate education is around 1944-1950. Nothing else to go on, I'm afraid.

By 1946 Mates had already worked closely with Tarski (presumably as a student at Berkeley). Tarski suggested his dissertation topic, though was not his official advisor.
From 1946 to 1950, I was an Engineering student at Berkeley. In probably 1948, I took a couple of sophomore-level philosophy courses from Mates. I think he was likely an Assistant Professor then.
Professor Mates was a gentleman, inspired original thought, spoke to me as a sentient being, and inspired incisive thought.
He allowed me to carry my disciplines and strengths as a student to eruption, and cautioned me to root and branch. I thank him for his words. I never worked harder for a professor, and found my mean with his inspiration. He was never too busy to give me time, and I thank him. He Invited me to his home, knew I was a full time student and worked a full time job as a mechanic at the airlines to make ends meet. A richer person I have never met.
Mates entered the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, in 1937 where he majored in philosophy and mathematics and took the BA in 1940. He re-ceived a Susan Lynn Sage Fellowship in Philosophy allowing him to study phi-losophy at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, between 1941 and 1942, with Richard Robinson and Anders Wedberg, and mathematics with Wallie Abraham Hurwitz and J. Barkley Rosser. In the fall of 1941, through Hurwitz, he became involved in the United States Navy’s program in cryptanalysis.
During 1942–1945, Mates worked for the United States Department of the Navy where he was Chief of Naval Operations, Communications Security.
Mates attended University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, California, during 1945–1948, where he studied philosophy with William Ray Dennes [q.v.] and Paul Marhenke [q.v.]; classics with Harold Cherniss and Ivan Linforth; and mathematics with Alfred Tarski. He took the PhD in 1948 upon presentation of a dissertation titled “The Logic of the Old Stoa.”
Mates joined the Berkeley Philosophy Department in 1948 as an Instruc-tor. During 1948–1958, he served as Assistant Professor and then Associate Pro-fessor of Philosophy. He was promoted to Professor at Berkeley in 1958 and remained in that position until 1989 when he retired Emeritus Professor.
