Max Black
Black was influenced by Russell, Wittgenstein, Moore, and Ramsey while an undergraduate at Cambridge, but he received a doctorate from the University of London in 1939, so I'd like to find his advisor for that degree to use for his parentage. Anyone know anything useful?

Black's dissertation, it seems, was "Theories of logical positivism" but I don't know who supervised it. Ayer wasn't at London yet, as far as I can tell (in the last 30's) so I don't think it could be him. I don't know who other likely candidates would be.
Susan Stebbing directed Black's dissertation.

Thanks, that's very useful. Now I need to track down Stebbing. She received an M.A. from London in 1912, and it looks like her thesis was what then appeared as the book Pragmatism and French Voluntarism.
W. E, Johnson was a central influence on Stebbing when she was a student at Cambridge.
A famous student of Max Black is Paul Ziff.
