Rogers Albritton

Albritton received his doctorate from Princeton in 1955. Putnam is a possibility, since he was at Princeton from 1953 to 1961, but it's a bit of a tight fit.

Update: Albritton has now been listed under Robert Scoon in the tree.

My name is Sarah Rogers Marmor. Rogers Albritton was my godfather. He lived above my parents at Harvard in faculty housing when I was, literally, in the womb in late 1964-1965. My parents were poor academics, and were miserable in the face of my unexpected conception. Rogers invited them to dinner one night, and -- whatever it was that he said - by the end of that dinner, their misery had become affirmative joy at my imminent arrival. I never met him, and he died a few months before my beloved mother did. But he truly gave me life, and I honor him.

I studied under Professor Albritton at Harvard from 1968-1972. He was my senior thesis advisor and I lived in Quincy House, the residential "house" at Harvard in which he resided. We periodically had the long evening dialogues - which he apparently was known quiet well for. He was so very friendly and respectful, yet intellectually challenging. He was a student hero when I arrived as a freshman - teaching his Humanities 5 survey class - with his explication of Plato. I was so honored to have him as my thesis advisor - although he was an analytic philsopher and a student of Wittgenstein, he agreed to oversee my thesis on Merleau-Ponty and epistemological and mind-body issues. He had his personal issues, as we all do, but he was a blessing in my life. He gave me intellectual confidence. He had a great dry wit. I learned a lot of philosophy from him as well. I saw him later a couple of times in Los Angeles after I moved there. we had two very engaging dinners, I believe. I was sorry to discover upon doing research recently that he had passed away, although I knew his emphysema was debilitating. Sarah your story about his talking to your parents is a precious one - and I can understand how he might have had that impact. - Jim Davis (jimdavis@hoskinsdavis.com)

Rogers Albritton was present at the smoke-filled student-faculty advisory committee meeting at Lowell House, Harvard, 1969, to discuss divestment in South Africa.I think he's the one next to Erik Erikson, in the front row.
